Match - Club Evening (9 fished) - 3rd overall

I missed the first evening (3hr) match and last weeks match was cancelled due to the hot weather resulting in a temporary keepnet ban.

Due to the increasing number of silvers in the lake, I wasn’t sure whether meat would be as effective as in previous years and speaking to those that fish here more regularly confirmed that it was working as well.

P6 wouldn’t have been my first choice as the margins are 5ft deep due to the bank being rebuilt a few years ago, although I could fish to p7 pallet where it was much shallower.

On the all-in I cast the method as tight as I dare to the island avoid plenty of overhanging branches, whilst I finalised sorting out my pole rigs. A stockie carp was my reward after 15mins and 3 casts.

A switch to fishing down the right margin next to a small patch of lillies, fishing corn and feeding 4mm pellet and corn resulted in a run of small skimmers, plus a bream and a tench, but it wasn’t as productive as I hoped.

I had also been feeding 8mm meat at 2+2 at an angle to my left and the response was much better with a proper bream and a hybrid, plus a couple of carp.

So, after 90mins I was doing ok, but I was conscious that there seemed to be more carp being caught to my left and across on p21 where Brian was fishing the waggler and 6mm pellet. As such, I felt I needed to catch carp rather than silvers.

For 30mins or so the wheels fell off, as I upped the feed over my meat line and right-hand margin, which just resulted in lots of small fish!

As yet I hadn’t fed by the p7 pallet, so ½ a cup of micros and corn was deposited here which soon resulted in tails in the swim. The problem was catching them.

I tried fishing double corn and caught a bream straight away. I then hooked and lost the next 3 carp. A few rig adjustments helped resulting in a couple of carp, before losing a rig on a foul hooker (fortunately the rig pinged back into the tree next to me).

Rather than set up a similar rig I thought I would try paste (So Simple Kriller), which proved frustrating with so many fish in the shallow water, but when I hooked a fish, it was at least in the mouth, netting my final fish in the whistle.

To be honest, I didn’t feel I fished a good match, as I kept chopping and changing, so I was a little to surprised to come 3^rd only missing out on 2^nd by 2oz (much to Martin’s relief).

A rare pleasure session at my club water and the intention was to target the silvers.

Although the water temperature was only 5c I've ended up having a lovely day.

I fed swims at 10m left and right in 7ft of water, with small balls of groundbait (So Simple BMGX : GSC mixed 2:1) with a few micros boosted with BMG and maggot.

My rig had a 0.09 bottom and size 20 F1 pellet hook attached to no8 black slip elastic.

By bouncing between the 2 swims I managed to keep the fish coming.

With 20 Lavington members all on Ellis Lake the draw was always going to be important. Fortunately I drew p5, one of the island pegs where the carp always patrol.

On the all-in I fed 2 balls of groundbait at 13m (in 8ft of water) with the intention of catching silvers, whilst that settled I started on the lead and bread (sprayed with Baninion Boost), expecting to spend no more than an hour on it.

After 90mins I had 6 carp for 35lb and I was still getting indications, adding a further 7 over the next 2hrs, before I couldn’t get a bite.

I hadn’t re-fed my 13m line, however, my good started meant I didn’t need it.

Instead, I decided to feed a shorter line in 5ft of water, with groundbait and pellet, hoping for some bream or carp. I also fed 4mm pellet and corn by the p4 platform. Neither line produced a bite.

I had also started pinging corn towards the island and managed my final carp on corn 10mins from time.

So a very simple match in the end and I was fortunate to land a few, collecting £100, plus a hamper which was very nice.

Match - Club (14 fished) - 2nd overall

No fishing last weekend as Abi and I stayed over at friends, for a welcome break.

Today was the John Lowe Memorial following Johns passing over 3 years now. With 14 booked on, Martin was able to give everyone a spare peg either side, but it was expected to be a tough match.

I was happy with p10. It’s normally the end peg, however with the extra anglers, I had Tim Lynch on p13. As I had no island to target the rods stayed in the bag and as I wasn’t sure how the lake would fish, I decided to cover all options as the start and see how it goes.

On the all-in I fed 2 balls of groundbait (Coco Squid : Crushed Expander) with kriller micros and 4s at 11m in 6ft of water, plus pellet and corn (covered in Baninion Boost) at 11m off to my right.

Whilst that settled I cupped in a small amount of 7mm meat (covered in Sludge Boost) by the right hand lillies. I caught a micro perch on the first drop in and then a 8lb carp on the second.

No more followed so I rotated between the groundbait swim where I picked up small skimmers on 4mm expander and 3 better skimmers on corn over the 11m right hand swim.

At the halfway point (5hr match) I felt there were 3 anglers leading the way, but generally it seemed to be slow going for most. As I wasn’t catching much in my deeper water swims, I decided to focus on the margins, targeting the left side where it was 2ft deep with CoCo Squid paste over micros and 4s and by the right side lillies where it was 3ft deep.

I had to keep rotating swims to keep catching. The right side produced the better stamp fish up to nearly 11lb and quickly caught up those ahead of me.

A moment of frustration was seeing someone’s rig (attached to a carp) move into my right-hand swim. When the float dipped, I hooked the rig rather than the carp. Unfortunately, the rig was hooked in the tail and after 5mins eventually I lost the fish in a snag, after it trashed my left-hand margin. I did recover the errant rig which I returned to its owner Paul Fryer at the end of the match.

After the commotion the fish returned, although it was not as prolific as I hoped. In hindsight, I may have fed too much down the left margin, as I struggled to get a clean bite in the last 15mins. Even fishing double corn didn’t help.

On the all-out I thought I was in with a shout of framing. Fortunately, the stamp of fish I caught helped me to 2^nd place.

This was the last evening match this summer, as its now getting a little too dark for the weigh ins at 9.00pm.

At least I didn’t draw p21, but that was only because it wasn’t put in (I think Martin took pity on me). Anyway, I drew the opposite side of the lake in the shape of p5, which I was happy with.

The left margin is deep at 5ft, whilst the right margin was at 3.5ft. I decided to feed the left margin first with meat and pellet, and the same again in another swim at 2+2 off to my right in the same depth of water so I could use the same rig, leaving the right margin until later.

Starting on the hybrid feeder to the far bank I was flirting with some overhanging branches and first cast caught a small carp. Second cast I caught the overhanging branches and lost the lot!

Switching to the left margin, I immediately started catching, mostly silvers with just the occasional small carp on 8mm meat, although I did lose a decent sized foul hooked carp. My secondary swim to my right only produced small silvers, so after an hour I stopped feeding it and started feeding my right-hand margin heavily with micros and meat.

The left margin kept producing during the second hour, regularly toss potting meat and 4mm pellet but as yet no proper carp and the right-hand margin only produced a bream, a small ide and tench.

With an hour to go I probably had about 40lb. I eventually caught an 11lber from the left margin. As for the right margin, I was still feeding aggressively with micros (feeding 3pts), 4s and meat and caught 5 carp on double 8mm meat to finish the match with 82lb, which was the best weight on my side of the lake.

However, the Ince brothers, Steve and Tom have dominated the evening matches this year claiming 1^st and 2^nd place – so well done to them.

As for me I was just glad to have a decent draw and a lovely evening’s fishing.

Match - Evening Club (11 fished) - 7th overall

We had 11 for tonight’s evening match and I somehow managed to draw p21 again (the same peg as last match where I struggled for 10lb) – I was not happy, as you can only fish the margins on a top kit and it didn’t plumb up well. The only change to my approach from last week was I searched a little wider to find a flat(ish) spot and found one to my right at 8m at 2 o’clock.

I decided to be quite aggressive with my feed as I felt it was the only way to pull fish into the swim. As well as 4x 200g tins of meat, I had 2pts of 4mm pellet and 3pts of micros – I wasn’t messing about.

On the all-in a half cup of meat and 4s was deposited at 8m and 4mm pellet to my left over a 2+1 line. Initially the meat line only produced silvers up to a pound including a rare barbel.

After 45mins I had my first bream and as the match progressed, I found it was best to cup in feed after each fish, continuing to pick up bream and some big hybrids.

The pellet line only produced a tench and a skimmer, as well as loads of small fish pecking at the bait. However, I did foul hook 2 carp, losing them both, which at least meant there were a few in the area.

Moving into the 2^nd hour the pellet line was binned, and I started feeding the margins with micros and meat. Its wasn’t until the 3^rd hour that I caught my first carp from the 8m line, soon followed by a 2^nd.

As for my margin, I caught a couple more bream, eventually catching a couple of carp late on.

My the all-out I knew I would be nowhere near framing, as I just couldn’t find enough carp, although I was pleasantly surprised with my weight of silvers which was the 3^rd best silvers weight on the night with Tom catching 30lb and Steve has 46lb.

Not much to say about this evening’s match. We only had 5 turn up and since there was still a pleasure angler fishing it was decided to peg us all down the far bank.

Peg 21 for me and no island chuck. As it has been hot during the day I wasn’t expecting too much in the first hour. Fishing 8mm meat in 5ft of water to my right and 4ft of water to my left only resulted in 5 small silvers, pulling out of a bream.

The second hour was worse, only adding a couple more silvers. As for the final hour I was hoping for a late run down my margin but only added 1 bream and 1 carp.

Difficult to understand why I couldn’t catch, and the poor run continues.

We had 8 for the first evening match of the year fishing 6-9.

I drew peg 24 and to be honest I wasn’t happy as I could only fish my margins on a top kit thanks to a bush to my left and reeds to my right, and it was 4ft deep.

Over the last 12 months the silvers have been showing more, small carp have been stocked and some of the bigger carp have been moved into Merretts Lake. Therefore, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but still expected I needed to catch some proper carp to compete.

I started on the method to the island, with micros and a 6mm pink wafter. Over the next 35 mins I caught a couple roach, tench and small carp, which was encouraging.

In the meantime, I had fed 8mm meat and 4mm pellet left and right in 5ft of water at 2+2. When I switched to the short lines, I immediately caught a couple of big bream on 8mm meat and some small carp, with the left side being the best.

I stopped feeding the right-hand swim in favour of feeding the right-hand margin with micros and meat. I kept catching from the left short line, but the margin was disappointing only netting a bream and a tench.

A quick look on the method produced a couple of carp including a 3lber. Another try over the margin didn’t produce so with 30mins remaining I decided to feed 2 handfuls of micros and a handful of meat. 15mins later I went back down the margin on double 8mm meat, fortunately 2 carp for 15lb proved very useful.

I had the best weight my side of the lake, but the better stamp carp seemed to be on the opposite bank. Well done to Steve who managed the best evening weight, beating my previous record of 95lb.

I drew p25, which to be honest I wasn’t that happy with as it 6ft deep at 2+2, going to 7ft further out, which I felt was too deep to catch properly. Therefore, I needed to catch short fishing left and right in 5 or 6ft of water or fishing tight to the island.

I started on the method to the island but overhanging branches were problematic and ended up switching to the pole lines much soon than intended. I had kept pinging 8s to the island and fishing the straight lead a couple of metres off the island, but never had a bite.

On the all in I had fed a 50:50 mix of Black ReAct : Black Bubblegum, with dead maggot and micros 10m to my right in 6ft of water. The first 2 hours were quite productive, catching 4 bream, with a few smaller fish in between. I found topping up with a small ball of feed every couple of fish was best, however as time went on I had to wait longer for bites.

I had also been feeding meat and micros to my left, catching a 6lber quiet quickly and fully expecting to catch a couple more. However, I only managed 1 bream over this line.

I had also been feeding margins, caster and corn down the right and meat and micros down the left. I never had a bite, in fact at the end of the match I scooped the margins with my landing net and the bait was still there.

The fish just didn’t want to come in too close and I regretted not bring a waggler rod as Martin to my left managed 3 carp on maggot in the last 2hrs and they were a much bigger stamp than mine.

As it happened the top 3 came from what were end pegs and probably an indication the fish preferred at the quieter ends of the lake.

Match - Club Christmas Match (14 fished) - 12th overall

With 14 anglers, this Christmas match was always going to be tough one. P25 put me in an area I thought would be Ok and I at least avoided the shallower end of the lake.

 

Starting on the lead and bread produced a small carp straight away. With no further bites on bread or corn, I tried my 11m line where I fed a 50:50 mix of Black ReAct & Black Bubblegum groundbait, a few 2mm p-nut pellet and dead reds. This produced some roach up to 12oz and then another small carp.
 
The rest of the match was just a struggle. I managed a handful of perch to my right at 8m on maggot, but I really needed to catch some carp.
 
I had expected to catch by the island late on where I had been pinging 4mm pellet and corn, but never had a bite. In fact, I tried various areas of the swim without success.
 
By the all out, I was in a row of 6 pegs, that were bottom of the standings, so obviously the fish didn’t want to be in the area. My peg was 8ft at 6m and just over 9ft at 11m, which in hindsight was too deep and the fish didn’t want to come in too close the bank.
 
As it turned out the shallower end of the lake was the place to be.

It was decided this would be the last evening match as its starting to get dark after 9pm when this matches end.

There were only the 6 of us and I drew p23, one away from where I was 2 weeks ago. I started on the method to the point of the island, but only had 1 small skimmer after 25mins.

Therefore, I spent the rest of the match on the pole. Having already fed A-krill cloud covered 8mm meat and 6mm p-nut pellet at 8m at an angle to my right in 5ft of water, I had a 6lb carp straight away. After that I was getting pestered by small fish, although I managed 4 stockie carp, 2 big bream and 2 tench.

In the meantime, I had been priming my left margin with meat and pellet, catching a couple of carp on double 8mm meat, plus another big bream and a tench, before it died.

Going into the third and final hour I fed bubblegum micros, with meat down both margins which certainly brought in the fish, including 2 doubles, to have a good finish to the match.

Match - Evening Club (8 fished) - 1st overall

An evening (3hr) knock-up at my club water and I drew p22 which is a good feeder peg as you have shallow water off the end of the island.

Starting on the method with a 6mm orange wafter and Uzit bubblegum micros, and the tip went round almost immediately. Then I started to get pestered by silvers, resulting in a switch to an 8mm wafter and I netted another 2 carp.

I tried a short meat line, but only caught a good-sized roach and had plenty of indications from small silvers. In the meantime, I had started feeding 8mm meat down my margins and soon started feeding 6mm uzit p-nut pellet to bulk out the feed to feed off the small silvers, and it worked.

The last 100mins of the match I spent alternating between each margin, netting a further 12 carp, 4 bream and a tench on double 8mm meat to win the match.

Match - Evening Club (7 fished) - 1st overall

The first evening match of the year, fishing 6 to 9 and we had some decent weather. I drew p1, but on arrival was a little concerned about the lily pads which I felt were a little too close to the platform and would make netting fish difficult. So, a quick chat with Martin and I moved to peg 2.

 
On the all-in I started by the lily pads feeding 8mm meat covered in Uzit A-krill cloud and caught 4 carp up to 14lb, plus a bream and a small tench in the first hour.
 
I had also been feeding pellet and corn to my left, but only got bites from silvers, so I concentrated on the lily pad swim, catching another 4 carp all on meat, during the 2^nd hour.
 
Unfortunately, the 3^rd and final hour was frustrating as I lost a couple of fish due to bad angling. It was also a surprise that I only caught 1 carp from the margins.
 
I did manage another proper carp from the lily pads, plus 2 stockies to end a pleasant evening.

01/10/23 - Lavington - Merretts

Match - John Lowe Memorial (13 fished) - 4th overall

Today’s club match was a memorial match for John Lowe who was an active member of the club and sadly died a few months ago following a motorcycle accident.

The match was held on Merretts rather than Ellis, as it was John’s favourite lake and 13 anglers turned up including John’s cousins.

P13 put me on the end peg at the top end of the lake by the inlet channel. Initially I was quite happy with the draw, however I was a little restricted with Tim Lynch on p15 opposite.

I decided to focus on fishing 8mm meat soaked in Uzit A-krill cloud, fed with 2mm p-nut pellet. On the all-in, 2 swims were fed left & right, at 3+2 in 5ft of water.

I hooked 1 fish to my right after 45mins which I pulled out of. 45mins later I netted a carp from the left swim, followed by 2 more over the next hour and was hopeful a few more fish would turn up. However, in the last 2 hrs it just died and I just felt the fish had moved out of this end of the lake, as Tim also stopped catching, whilst anglers further down were catching.

Due to the left hand tree I couldn’t fish the left margin, which meant I only had the right margin to target. A lot of groundwork has been completed on the lake recently to strengthen the bank and as a consequence the margins plumbed up horribly. I managed to find a flatish spot about a metre off the bank where I fed some meat and mircos.

With no bites or any signs of fish, I fed more heavily including with groundbait. I hooked 1 carp which I pulled out of, but nothing else and there were no signs of any fish.

I eventually caught my last carp 10mins from time on my top kit next to my keepnets, where I dumped some meat & micros.

So, a hard day’s fishing, but it wasn’t really about that. At the end of the match there was a presentation by Johns 2 daughters to the top 3 and £330 was raised for John’s favourite charity.

Only 5 this evening due to some being away and holidays. I drew p9, which doesn’t have an island chuck so kept the feeder rod in the car.

Plumbing around revealed a weed bed slightly to my right at 6m. I managed to clear out some that was a little closer and down my right margin, however the weed bed proved to be a pain.

Instead of my usual plan of fishing 3+1 left and right left in 5ft of water, I had to go 4+1. Any fish hooked to my right I hoped I could pull around the weed bed, although a small tench did manage to bury himself in it! There were also lily pads to my left and I decided to stay clear due to the risk of fish snagging me up.

On the all in, I fed both swims with ½ cup of mostly 8mm meat and 6mm pellet. First drop in on the right swim and the float

had barely settled before I hooked and landed a carp. This was quickly followed by a second and I thought we would be in for a mega evening.

Unfortunately, I lost the next 2 fish, which I think were foul hooked, although I think 1 of them was a proper lad hooked under the chin.

So, I finished the first hour with those 2 early fish, the second hour only produced a further 2 carp, although I had a couple of lovely looking roach.

In previous matches I have kept both swims topped with regular small amounts of bait. However, it was obvious there were a number of silvers/tiny carp in the swims and I found it was best to

cup in a ¼ cup of bait to feed off the silvers. As a result, I needed to open a fourth tin of meat.

Going into the final hour I abandoned the right-hand swim and instead started feeding my right margin, simply because I didn’t have a left margin to target. I had 5 fish from my original left swim and only 2 from the right margin although I lost 2 from the margin due to the weed.

So, a frustrating evening due the weed, but I caught some lovely fish including a 10lb ghostie.

Match - Club (10 fished) - 1st overall

A little cooler that the last evening match 2 weeks ago and with recent heavy rain the expectation was it would be a little hard.

I was happy with peg 7, as you have shallow water off the point of the island, although I had to clear out a bit weed before starting.

As per the last match I fed 2 swims left and right at 2+3 potting in meat. Whilst that settled, I started on the feeder and surprisingly didn’t have a bite after 30mins of trying.

Switching to the pole I eventually caught a 1lb carp on 8mm meat after a missing a couple of dinks from what I assume were silvers or small carp.

Moving into the 2^nd hour I manged 2 better fish from the left hand swim, before catching another 2 from the right hand swim.

In the 3^rd hour I had another 3 fish from the right hand swim and 3 from left margin where I had fed micros and meat, including a 10lber netted a couple of minutes before the end. Fortunately, that fish was enough to win.
