I was very disappointed to draw High Pool, as I had struggled on this lake last year. Peg 17 also meant I was next to peg 15, a well-known flyer.

On the all-in I had considered starting short on pellet, but the wind was forecast to get stronger throughout the match, so I decided to start across whilst I was able.

Feeding stodgy balls of Cocosquid with chopped worm, micros and caster, with worm on the hook I found a flat spot in amongst the far bank reeds. The wind was a pain at times, however after 90mins I had 10 fish for about 12lb and looking around felt I was doing OK.

In the meantime, I had been feeding maggot down both margins (top kit +1) and immediately caught a couple F1s before the swim faded.

I had also been feeding fishery 4s (boosted with Baninion) at 2+2 at an angle to my right in 5ft of water, just as I thought I wasn’t going to get bite I caught a 3lb F1 and ended up staying on this line for an hour catching some chucky F1s all on 4mm expanders.

For the last 90mins of the match it was a case of rotating around my short swims. I had also started feeding 6mm meat (boosted with Baninion) over a top kit +1 line. I hooked a carp on meat, that was obviously foul hooked as it took me into the far bank reeds! I then had a 4lber, before hooking another carp that I thought was hooked properly, before it decided to go mental and broke me.

Next, I caught a couple of F1s, before hooking another carp 10mins from time. Fortunately, this one behaved itself and at 10-11lb was well worth having to help comfortably win the section.

I felt I fished a good match, but was a little disappointed to miss out on a super pool payout by 7oz. Losing those 2 carp, knocked me out of my rhythm for a bit, but I was really pleased to have had a strong start to the festival.

High Pool again for me, but this time p38 and I was reliably told it was one of the worst pegs on the lake and plumbing up revealed why. I had 5ft of water on a top kit, levelling out to 6ft further out. Fortunately, the margins were only 2.5ft deep either side, but shelved away quickly, and I expected this would be where I caught most of my fish.

On the all-in I started across by the spit, fishing my groundbait mix from the previous 2 matches. After 15mins I caught a F1 on worm and lost another 30mins later. I did try later in the match and caught another F1, but the wind was making presentation difficult. In fact, the 2 anglers on the spit who fished to the corner, caught very little so I don’t think there were many fish in the area.

I tried fishing pellet over 2 lines catching 4 F1s and a skimmer, and it was very slow going.

My best area was the left margin on maggot.

I felt I was ahead of the 4 anglers I could see in my section, but felt I needed a carp, so I dumped micros and 4s at 10m to my right and I had been feeding meat on my top kit next to my nets.

Fishing paste over the micros produced a small F1 and my meat line also only produced 1 F1.

The 2 anglers in my section (p27 & p30) that I couldn’t see, both beat me and as it happened I only missed out on 2^nd in section by 3lb and a bonus carp would have been handy, but it wasn’t meant to be.

When I drew this peg I thought I had a chance of finishing the festival strongly.

The island was 16/17m away, but with New Pool directly behind me it wasn’t really practical to fish to the island. So, the plan of action was to start on pellet, catch on caster shallow as it was a little warmer today and down my margins.

Starting on pellet at 2+2 I only had 1 small F1 and was soon trying my margins on maggot, with the right side being the best, but action was slow going.

I tried fishing worm over ground further down my right margin on the other side of the gap,

which produced a few fish, but once again it was slow going.

I had primed a shallow caster line but only caught 4 F1 despite trying different shallow rigs.

In the last 2 hours I just tried to focus on my margins, plus a new 2+2 line where I fed caster, catching on worm.

The problem was I would only catch in fits and starts, and I never caught any carp or the bigger F1s. I just felt with the wind blowing down the other end of the lake, it had pushed those fish further down the lake.

I was really disappointed with how my match went, finishing the festival 48^th so an improvement on last year’s 61^st place.

Summary

My intention was always to improve on last years 61^st place, which I achieved, however it could have been so much better.

The first day, everything just clicked, making the right decisions at the right time, which resulted in the best score and weight from the peg over the 3 days.

The second day was just hard work from a poor peg and I was pleased to have claimed 3^rd in section, as well as achieving the best weight over the festival.

At the start of the third day was I was lying 27^th, by the end of the day I dropped to 48^th. A really disappointing day. If I’m honest I felt the fish just weren’t here on the day, but its difficult to ignore there were significantly better results from the peg over the previous 2 days.

Overall, it’s always a tough one to compete with the locals and ‘full-time’ anglers, but I really enjoy fishing the venue as you usually get plenty of bites and I have booked in for next year.

As for my partner in crime, Matt finished 49^th, helped by drawing p6 on House twice!

17/05/26 - Tunnel Barn - Extension

Today was the practice open for the Over 50s festival that Matt Greaves and I signed up for another go.

Last year was all around caster shallow, meat and paste (for those few that fish it). However, this year has been much cooler leading up to the festival, so Matt and I weren’t sure how much of the caster we had to pre-order we would use, plus we had to make a late order for maggot.

I drew p3 on Extension and had considered starting on maggot over 2 short (2+2) lines. Instead, I decided to start on pellet, feeding fishery 4s boosted with Baninion, fishing a 4mm expander.

Surprisingly I spent the first 90mins fishing between the 2 lines, putting 20lb in the net.

As the swim faded, I tried both my margins fishing maggot, but couldn’t get a bite, so I then switched to fishing 16m to the island. It was a slow start, which meant I had a poor 30/45mins after switching from my pellet swim.

Fortunately, by tosspotting stodgy balls of So Simple Cocosquid groundbait mixed with chopped worm, micros and caster, I started to catch on worm, including some better stamp F1s and carp. I ended up staying on this for 2hrs hour and other than Aiden Mansfield on p9 I couldn’t see much else being caught.

In the last hour, I had hoped to finish in my margins, feeding maggot down the left and pellet down the right. Well, the maggot swim was disappointing, and I soon switched to feeding my stodgy groundbait fishing worm over the top. I kept feeding pellet down the right margin picking up the odd better stamp F1.

At the weigh in I thought I had won my section, before realising my section didn’t include the 2 end pegs, but the pegs on the opposite side of the lake and the section was won from p23 with 70lb.

Match - Catchybait Open (58 fished) - 22nd overall, 4th on lake

With a view to practicing for the over 50s festival in 2 weeks I booked onto this Catchybait match over Club, Extension, House and New. Being a Catchybait match it meant natural baits only, caster, maggot and worm, but no groundbait or worm soil to be fed.

The draw put me on p40 New. A quick chat with a couple of locals confirmed what I thought. Not the best area, but at least I could try to win my 5-peg section.

Plumbing up revealed the deepest part of the swim was 3ft at 5m and at 14m to the right of the island. On the all-in I decided to try worm over toss potted caster by the island but I couldn’t get a bite. I tried maggot, again with no bites which was a worry, but I couldn’t see much being caught elsewhere.

The lack of action prompted a switch of hook

from a 16 B911 to an 18. I also started tapping in maggot to the left of my original swim next to the island, catching a F1 and then a small perch, but then I couldn’t get another bite.

A brief look over my short maggot line resulted in an F1, before again catching another perch.

Back to the island I decided to use a bigger toss pot of maggot and caught an 8lb ghostie which was a real bonus but I could only catch 1 more F1.

The next couple of hours was spent nicking

the odd fish from various areas of the swim, including down the right-hand bank all on maggot. I did try catching shallow on caster without success before switching to maggot catching only 3 fish, so hardly prolific.

With 90mins remaining I probably had about 25lb, before my 2+2 left margin kicked off where I had a really good run on maggot. I also had a couple of better fish including a 4lb carp from my shallow right margin on a top kit where I fed heavily with caster and maggot with 3 maggots on the hook. I just wished we had another hour.

When I saw the weigh sheet, I was pleasantly surprised to see I had come 4^th on the lake and managed to pick up the section albeit by default.

Match - Tackle Den (19 fished) - 3rd overall, 1st in section

I always enjoy my trips to Tunnel Barn as you usually get a few bites. However, the weather was pants again with freezing overnight temperatures and a cold north westerly wind, which meant it was likely to be difficult.

Today’s match was on New Pool, which is one of the lakes I have yet to fish, although I was told p25 wasn’t the best area.

I knew meat was starting to work, however due to the recent cold weather I brought 3pts of maggot boosted with Baninion and So Simple red dye just in case. Due to the wind I decided to focus on fishing no further than 3 sections, plus a short kit.

During the first hour I got it wrong, starting down the left margin with maggot for 1 gudgeon, meat down the right margin for nothing and meat at 3 sections for 1 F1. To be honest when the margins didn’t produce, I spent too long trying to make the meat line work.

In meantime, whilst it was slow going for everyone, Andy Burns to my left started catching on maggot and I had to get myself sorted.

Fishing at 3 sections to my left (with the wind) in 4.5ft of water I found it best to feed through a toss pot, mainly because the wind was making it difficult to accurately to feed by hand.

2hrs into the match I probably had 10lb, fortunately the rest of the match went much better as I started getting more regular bites including some decent F1s.

However, it started to rain and at one point I was shivering in the strong wind.

With 90mins remaining, I started suffering from missed bites and foul hookers. A switch to fishing closer where it was 4ft proved to be the correct move reducing the number of missed bites.

To periodically rest the swim, I restarted feeding meat over my original line, however the F1s were a smaller stamp so I didn’t waste too much time on it this time. The left margin, which was slightly deeper than the right, eventually produced a few fish in the last 30mins on maggot, whilst the right margin didn’t produce anything.

I weighed slightly more than expected and was left ruing that poor first hour, as I missed out on 2^nd by 2oz. I am fairly sure had it not been so windy another 10-20lb was possible.

Match - Tackle Den (16 fished) - 5th overall, 2nd in section

My first trip back to Tunnel since the over 50s festival in May and I was looking forward to it, as we were on House Pool which is my favourite. However, it would be nice to draw away from pegs 8 to 14 and see a different area of the lake, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when I drew p14. An open deep-water swim with no island within pole range.

I had wanted to fish caster shallow and ideally needed cover or a decent ripple on the water, as I have had 90lb shallow here in the past.

Although I found out that maggot was the current bait, and I did think about buying some from the on-site shop, I decided to stick with my plan of caster and paste.

On the all-in I started at 1+1 fishing paste (50:50 mix of So Simple Coco Squid & Crushed Expander) over fishery 4mm pellet. I stayed on this for 90mins alternating between 2 swims, catching mostly F1s.

I had primed a shallow caster line and when I switched the response was disappointing. After trying 3 different shallow rigs, I only had 1 F1 and 2 roach and soon binned the line.

Instead, I focused on my margins finding 18ins of water down the left and right toss potting caster, fishing double caster. I bounced between the 2 swims, with the left margin being the strongest, before trashing my rig. Once I sorted a new rig it took 10-15mins to get back in a rhythm, but the right-hand swim wasn’t quite the same.

I tried introducing a small amount of groundbait to kick start the right margin which just drove the fish scatty, so I didn’t do that again.

The left margin was still producing which I kept topped up with caster. As for the right margin I plumbed up a new shallower spot where I fed some micros and 4s, fishing paste over the top. I managed to catch a few better stamp F1s and carp, but generally the fish weren’t feeding confidently.

I must admit I didn’t feel I got it right today and maggot would have been a better option. In the end I was quite relieved to claim the section money by default thanks to John coming 2^nd overall from p6. As I expected the better weights came from the back of the pool.

Tunnel Barn - Over 50s Festival

Having enjoyed a couple of previous trips to Tunnel Barn I decided to book into this year’s 3 day over 50s festival, sharing a cottage 10 miles away with Matt Greaves. We also had the added bonus of a pair of peacocks on the grounds.

We both knew it would be tough fishing against a number of venue regulars and F1 specialists, but we were both up for the challenge.

I set myself the target of trying to finish 60^th out of 120 and if possible to pick up some money along the way.

 

Sunday - Practice Open

Weight – 87lb 10oz

Catch – 63 F1, 8 Carp, 2 Skimmers, 1 Perch

Weather – Warm and sunny

Position – 5^th overall (66 fished)

In preparation for the festival Matt & I had researched the pegs, likely weights and tactics. Leading up to the event meat had been dominate, but was losing its effectiveness, being replaced by maggot and caster. Matt also found out that worm was catching, so a 1/2 kg was sourced prior to leaving.

I had already decided against using maggot, mainly because I had tried it twice on recent visits and got pestered by small fish. Therefore, my intention was to concentrate on caster and if necessary, worm.

As this was a practice match, I thought I would try something different, namely paste and if I blew out it wouldn’t be tried again.

I have been playing around with my paste mix and come up with a mix I’m really happy with – Uzit GLM & Betaine:Crushed Expander:Crushed Halibut Pellet, mixed in a 3:2:1 ratio. Also, as I would be fishing for F1s my rigs had been refined from my normal carp approach.

When I drew p6 on Canal I was told it was a good area, but other than that I’ve never fished the lake before.

On the all-in I fished 2 swims, left & right at 3+1 at the bottom of the shelf, feeding a couple of fishery 4mm pellet and started catching well for 30mins, before having to move up the shelf to avoid the increasing liners.

In the meantime, I had been feeding caster to the far bank and at the halfway point felt I needed to at least try it. To be honest the response was disappointing only catching a couple of fish. Simon Dukes, 2 pegs down was catching a few fish across but wasn’t any quicker than me on the paste.

So, I stuck with paste, rotating between a new bottom of the shelf swim at 1+1 and both margins until the end of the match.

I knew I had beaten everyone on my side of the lake, but the section was split down the middle, so I got beaten for section by a peg on the opposite bank. However, when I got back to the club house I found out I came 5^th overall to pick up £75 for the last framing place. Have to say I was quite pleased with myself.

After yesterday’s success I was looking forward to the draw and pulled p21 on High Pool, another lake I haven’t fished before. Asking around revealed it wasn’t great, and yesterdays practice open only produced 24lb.

When I got to the peg I actually fancied it for a few, until I plumbed up. It was at least 6ft (I stopped plumbing after 5ft) down the middle. Also, the island was 16m away and the far shelf was quite narrow, fortunately I managed to find a small flat spot which was 2ft deep.

On the all-in I started across tapping in a few micros with a 4mm expander and caught 2 F1s before the liners started.

A switch to the paste over a couple of short lines was disappointing as the swim was just too deep and I struggled to get a clean bite. A switch back to the far bank, feeding a ball of paste slop with micros and caster fishing worm on the hook, resulted in 10 F1s, although it was slow going.

In the meantime, I had fed caster down the middle priming a shallow line, but didn’t get a bite despite trying various shallow rigs.

So, I persisted with the paste rigs down the margins and by the next pallet.

A tough day and to be honest I was a little deflated, particularly after yesterday.

I really didn’t want to see High Pool again and was relieved to draw p10 on House. It has been a great peg, although it hasn’t been quite as dominate in the last couple of weeks.

With it being bright and sunny with very little breeze I wasn’t convinced I would catch shallow, which proved to be the case catching only 1 F1. Therefore, I expected to catch most of my fish short or down the margins, as the island was 20m away.

Starting on paste at 2+2 I caught a couple of fish. It was steady rather than quick and I was conscious of wasting too much time. I tried pellet over the same line, but didn’t have a bite, so it was back to paste.

My section ran from p10 round to p27, which meant I could only see 3 anglers from my section and felt I was in danger of falling behind p16, however the 2 pegs to my left were really struggling.

The slight breeze had pushed the scum into my peg, and I noticed a few fish moving around by a clump of reeds 10m to my right that hadn’t been cut down, casting a small patch of shade. I started pinging caster and caught 4 F1 on the overshotted rig, mainly to get under the scum, fishing tight to the bank under the reeds. However, each fish was smaller than the last.

The scum wasn’t as thick a metre off the bank and plumbing up revealed a flat bottom and 2 ft of water. By fishing worm and tosspotting 20/30 casters I started catching some proper F1s and I had a purple patch of 45mins where I was catching quite quickly.

As a backup I tried feeding caster on a top kit, but all I caught was small fish. However, resting my reed swim would result in another run of fish when I returned.

Eventually the reed swim slowed down. I could still only catch small fish on my top kit. Fortunately, my left margin at 1+1 where it was much shallower, I managed another run of fish on paste.

Overall, I was really pleased with how the match went and confidence restored. I thought I might have won the section as everyone was admitting to 50-60lb, however p27 dumped 90lb on the scales and I finished 2^nd for another pick up.

Peg 7 on Club today and when I saw the previous results for the peg I was a little disappointed, as I had hoped to have a strong finish.

Harry Billing won the section from p9 yesterday on paste. As it happened, I had a chat with him yesterday to get a feel for how he fished paste. I think what came out of it was I need to be a bit more frugal with my feed.

When I got to my peg it was only 11m wide with reeds opposite and narrower than the pegs on the opposite bank.

I started on the paste and caught a few fish, but it wasn’t as quick as I had hoped, although looking around it seemed to be a quiet start for most. In attempt to catch more quickly I tried pellet over my paste lines but only caught a couple of skimmers and a small F1, so soon changed back to paste.

After an hour I switched to fishing worm over caster tight to reeds and was pleased to pick up a few better stamp F1s. I had kept my paste line top up, but it was slow going so I ended up spending most of the middle part of the match fishing worm across.

In the last hour I concentrated on trying to catch short and struggled just picking up the odd fish, although 4 better stamp fish on paste in the last 15mins was nice.

I finished 4^th in section. Whilst pleased to have got the best section points from the peg, I was a little disappointed as 3^rd only weighed 36-15 and 2^nd 40-13 which was achievable.

Summary

Overall, an enjoyable 4 days, finishing 61^st and just missing my target of finishing under halfway.

A few better decisions would have got me a couple more points, however putting it into context 2 poor draws didn’t help me.

Following the practice open I was confident I would catch on paste on day 1 and ultimately came undone by the depth the peg. To be honest it did knock my confidence, but looking at the results the peg didn’t produce in the festival.

Day 2 on House was definitely my best day, producing the highest weight and points score from the peg. As for day 3 I managed the highest points score from the peg, but felt I should have got more from the peg.

It’s been a learning curve and I have already booked in for next year.
