Weight - 36lb 10oz (11lb 10oz - silvers)
Catch - 3 Carp, 10 Roach, 9 Skimmers, 1 Tench, 1 Perch
Weather - Windy and mostly cloudy
Match - Winter League - 11th out of 19 - section

The penultimate round of the winter league and after the last round Colmic SW needed a decent draw to maintain our top 5 position. Well that honour fell to Martin Preston and when he came out of the lodge the look on his face said it all, he had failed.

Mark Poppleton on was p94, Martin Preston p62, Calum Craig p46, Nick Merry p15 and I had p126 directly opposite were I was yesterday. So far this series the best weight from my peg was 12lb and I wasn't filled with a great deal of optimism since the majority of weights have been coming from the other side of the spit around the aerator.

Anyway I had a job to do and based on yesterdays match felt that silvers was going to play a part in picking a few extra points, that was assuming the wind blowing down the lake would allow. For company I had Nick Collins on p127 and Steve Skelton on p125.

On the all in, I deposited a 1/4 pot of caster with a few bits of corn at 13m, deciding against using the groundbait. Instead of starting on the tip like every one else, I went short at 7m with meat just in case. If there were any carp in the middle of the lake those around me would soon catch them.

After 15mins and no bites on the meat and no one had caught on the tip, I switched to the pole, conscious that I needed to make the most of the favourable wind since the forecast was for the wind to increase in strength later in the day. I also decided to fish double caster, since I really needed to catch some proper fish rather than little roach and it wasn't long before I caught a 2lb skimmer, followed by another. On the hour mark I had an 8lb carp on the lead and corn.

The rest of the match was a case of catch a fish on the pole, pot 50 or so caster and a couple of bits of corn. If I had a run of roach, a bigger pot of bait was introduced and whilst that settled I would switch to the lead. A near 10lb carp at 20m after 3hrs meant I was beating those around me, however most of the anglers on the opposite bank were catching and it was becoming apparent that I was probably in the poorest area of the lake.

The wind in the last hour was increasing in strength and it was becoming difficult to hold the pole even at 13m with a bump bar. A margin swim fed with caster didn't yield anything and a try over the 7m meat line resulted in a lost foul hooked carp, but I couldn't get decent presentation due to the undertow.

With 30mins to go, a big pot of caster and some corn was deposited at 14m, but instead of fishing the pole, I switched to the straight lead at 16/17m and caught my 3rd carp again on corn.

By the end of the match, I felt I fished a good match, beating those around me, but simply couldn't compete the current form pegs.

As for the team, we had a mare, with Mark and Martin struggling we ended up with 40pts, which has dropped us down to 8th in the league. A decent draw and a bit of luck is required for the last round to get back into the top 5.

25/02/17 - Viaduct - Campbell

Weight - 11lb 4oz
Catch - 23 Roach, 12 Skimmers, 2 Perch, 1 Skimmer
Weather - Windy, cloudy with some rain
Match - Open - 2nd out of 19 - silvers

With 19 booked in, there would be 16 on Campbell and 3 on Cary. I really wanted to be on Campbell, because I would be on the same lake in tomorrows Winter League.

P115 wasn't a good start, because it has shown very little form for carp or silvers and coupled with the wind which was blowing up the lake a tricky day was likely. It just seems I cant draw on the carp at the moment, since all my recent pick ups have been on the silvers.

As we were setting up there was a lot of fish showing themselves in the more sheltered end around the aerator and that's were I expected the winner to come from.

On the all in 3 balls of groundbait with some caster was deposited at 11m at a slight angle to my left and I started on the tip with meat, then corn and finally prawn, but after 45 mins no fish. In fact except for p119 no one had a carp at this end of the lake.

A switch to fishing maggot over the groundbait didn't produce a bite - oh dear. fortunately I managed a small roach over loose fed caster at 13m, were I caught a few more, before switching to caster which produced a slightly larger roach, but they were becoming a pain. I kept messing about with my feed, finding it best to pot in small amounts of caster and I started to pick up some better sized fish.

The wind was also becoming an issue. I really wanted to push longer to 14m, but the wind simply wouldn't allow me. A switch to heavier rig, fished double bulk proved decisive catching 2 big perch and a skimmer, but presentation was far from prefect.

As the match drew to a close I felt I was probably winning the silvers although the angler on 128 had caught a couple of big skimmers. So losing a tench at the net was very frustrating, but my timing could have been better as Dave White and Dave Romain who were stood behind me offered little sympathy as I let out a few expletive.

Any thoughts of winning overall though were thwarted because Emma Drysdale on 81 had caught some big hybrids and tench by the monk. That's about the 6th or 7th time I come 2nd in the silvers at viaduct in the last 10 months.

I felt I didn't get most out of the swim due to wind, but relieved to at least pick up another brown envelope.

19/02/17 - Lands End - Match

Weight - 38lb 10oz (6lb 12oz - silvers)
Catch - 5 Carp, 3 F1s, 3 Skimmers, 4 Roach, 1 Perch
Weather - Mild and mostly cloudy
Match - Winter League rd 4 - 3rd out of 33 silvers (12th overall)

It was back to a random draw today and to be honest I wasn't concerned about which lake to draw. After 3 rounds my league hasn't quite gone to plan, were any pick up in the overall league was unlikely, but a top 2 position in the silvers league was a definite possibility since I was lying 3rd.

Have to say I was more than happy to draw p20, since it made up my mind to target the silvers, because with the current flyers of p11, 13 & 15 were in my section it was unlikely I could compete. Also having won the silvers from p19 yesterday and winning the silvers in round 3 from this peg 2 weeks ago I was hopeful of another good day.

For company was Joe McMahon on p18 and Rich Lovering on p22 (in a different section) who was also hoping for a day on the silvers as he was lying 2nd in the silvers.

Tactics would be similar to yesterday, so started on the corn without feeding and in the first 90 mins I picked up 3 carp and more importantly 3 F1s. Despite trying various spots I caught all the fish from 1 spot slightly to my right at the bottom of the far shelf.

After those initial 90mins I fed gonuts black micros in 2 spots at the bottom of the shelf. A switch to fishing maggot over caster at 7m where I had fed from the start proved fruitless and down by the p19 pallet also proved disappointing, catching only caught a 1lb perch on caster.

In fact the remainder of the match was really frustrating, I managed to pick up 3x 12oz skimmers on 4mm expander over the micros, but nothing else. It was strange, because all my usual 'tricks' to catch were failing me.

I knew Russ Peck on p11(in my section) had caught 2 decent skimmers for about 5lb and could very easier steal the silvers section points. As I struggled to get bites I started to be more aggressive with my feed to try and pull in some fish, but all I ended up doing was killing my swim.

A bit of a tense end to the match and was relieved when Russ hadn't added to his 2 skimmers, which meant I had won my section for silvers. Rich got pipped for his silvers section points by 1oz - thanks Dave Hodgson!

As expected Bob Gullick on p13 and Steve Hutter on p15 came 1st and 2nd in section, so the decision to focus on the silvers proved to be the right one since I am now leading the silvers league.

Catch - 6 Roach, 5 Skimmers, 3 F1s, 3 Perch, 1 Tench, 2 Carp
Weather - Mild and mostly bright
Match - Open - 1st out of 14 - silvers (4th overall)

I made a very late decision to fish, since I was expecting to return from a couple of days in Christchurch with Sue today (Saturday), but managed to get away a day early, which was handy. One afternoon I left Sue with her mother and took a walk along the Royalty stretch of the Avon, including the famous parlour swim. Couldn't see any fish due to some extra water in the river, but it certainly looked inviting as did a number of other swims.

Back to today I arrived in plenty of time to have one of Di's breakfasts and those in the cafĂ© loved the fact I blanked at Viaduct, all the one liners were coming out.

With 14 anglers today, we were all on Match lake, so very few spaces for the fish hide, but everyone still wanted the pegs at the top end of the lake, i.e. 11, 13 & 15. I was first into the draw and pulled 19, which is usually worth a few a fish so at least I should have a days fishing and if there weren't many carp in residence then you can usually catch a few silvers.

On the all in I started on corn without introducing any feed to see what fish were in the swim. The float hardly settled off the point of the island and I was attached to a tench. Rod Wootten next to me on p18 was still potting out his bait. Next put in I netted an F1, which was a nice start.

After an hour I only managed to add 1 carp, despite the fact there were a number showing themselves around the island, but they weren't interested in feeding. With no further bites I feed some gonuts black micros in 2 areas along the bottom of the far shelf.

It became obvious that pegs 13 and 15 were catching as was peg 1 and 24, so the carp appeared to have pushed to either end of the lake and any chance of an overall pick up was looking slim.

The remainder of the match was focused on fishing soft pellet over micros to catch some silvers, but it was proving tricky, since I couldn't get more than 1 fish from any one swim before I had to refeed, leave and try elsewhere.

I also fed caster to my left by the bush which produced 2 decent perch on prawn, plus a good skimmer on caster. I also lost 2 decent fish when the hook pulled, which was annoying.

Rod had managed a couple of decent skimmers on meat over pellet, but was generally stuggling. The only other angler I needed to worry about was Paul Faires on p7 who was catching consistently albeit mostly small roach.

I just kept plugging away picking up the odd fish and by the all out felt I had done enough to win the silvers, which is how it turned out.

The water was still very cold, however a couple more weeks of this mild weather and the fish should start waking up properly.

12/02/17 - Viaduct - Spring

Weight - blank
Catch - not even a bite!
Weather - Bitterly cold
Match - Winter League - rd 3 - last.

A decent draw was required today to consolidate our position in the league and Mark Poppleton took charge. Unfortunately he came back with one of the worst draws putting himself on p132 (which blanked last round), Martin Preston on p102, Mark Wynne on p71, Nick Merry on p52 and myself on p21.

Peg 21 is a shockingly poor peg at the best of time, which rarely produces and Andy Power struggled for 3lb in the last round. When I got to the peg the freezing northerly was blowing into the corner of the lake and the prospects of doing any good were looking remote.

Last week when the weather was mild, there were carp in this corner, but following some artic conditions over the last few days the water had gone crystal clear. I also got annoyed (and told him so) at one angler (Terry Lenny) who decided it would be a good idea to stand on the platform of p23 right next the mouth of the gap into middle lake, so if there were any carp in the area there weren't likely to be there now!

Well that's the excuses out of the way! I tried the straight lead with corn, prawn and dead maggot hoping for one carp, but didn't even have a liner. On my silvers line, I didn't have a single bite despite going down to a 22 and .08 bottom. Bob Gullick next to me on p20 managed 11oz but most of those fish came on the limits of his swim towards p24.

Really disappointed not to have caught, but genuinely don't believe there was any fish in the area . This was my first blank at Viaduct. Fortunately Mark on p132 managed to catch a few and Martin also got good points, but overall a total team points of 42, means we are now 5th in the league.

08/02/17 - Goodiford Mill

Weight - 14lb 1oz
Catch - 40 Skimmers, 10 Roach
Weather - Cold overnight. Bright & sunny

I am currently in between jobs, starting a new one in 11 days and since I have some time on my hands, I contacted Andy Seery's to arrange a time for a together. We decided on Goodiford Mill, because its a venue Andy has fished a lot recently catching many of the venues silvers population.

When we met at McDonalds just off the motorway we tried to work out how long it has been since we last saw each other and concluded it must have been about 8 years! How time fly's. Andy generously agreed to sponsered this years Lands End Winter League and I was presented with 3 more boxes of groundbait and pellet which should cover the next couple rounds. Well it saved on the postage.

I've never been to Goodiford Mill and was pleasantly surprised it only took me 75mins to get there and it was only a few minutes off the motorway junction. As for the main lake, it certainly looked interesting and speaking to the new owner who is taking over from his deceased step father, the intention is to tidy up the lakes and include some much needed platform.

Mal King joined us as well and with 3 competitive anglers fishing it didn't take long, before we agreed to have a knock up. We settled on pegs 9,10 and 11 which is a deep area of the lake. I drew 9, Andy was on 10 and Mal 11.

As expected Andy knocked up a good amount of his Black Gold groundbait. Me on the other hand took a slightly less aggressive approach since the weather had turned colder in the last couple of days. I think Andy got a bit dizzy with excitement after seeing photos of big skimmers caught yesterday, introducing 4 big balls with plenty of micros at the start.

Plumbing up revealed just over 6ft of water all over, which would keep things simple. Only 2 rigs, a 0.75g Dino Long Bream float fished double bulk and 0.5g chimp shotted up more conventionally.

The day proved to be quite tough due to the recent cold weather combined with a chilly northerly breeze.

My day was spent rotating 3 swims. 13m to my left over groundbait, including a few micros and dead maggot, 13m to my right fed negatively with black micros and a 6m line with groundbait and caster.

The fish never seemed to settle properly. The double bulk rig initially was quite successful, until the fizzing started and foul hookers became a problem particularly over the left hand swim. Switching the light rig improved matters, fishing just on bottom.

The right hand swim was my banker for later in the session, because I thought and hoped the better skimmers would turn up over the micros, fishing a 4mm expander. Well I did catch some better skimmers over this line, but it never really took off.

As for the short line, at one point I thought I had it sussed because I had a spell fishing the caster were the float was burying almost instantly, but again the fish just didn't settle.

When it was time to pack up, mainly governed by the fact it was starting to feel really cold, I finished with 14-1, compared to Andy's 10-2 and Mal's 9-9. None of us had any real quality which was a shame, but I could certainly see the potential for the place.

Overall a lovely day's fishing in great company.

05/02/17 - Lands End - Match

Weights - 21lb 10oz (14lb 7oz - silvers)
Catch - 11 Roach, 10 Skimmers, 2 Perch, 1 F1, 1 Hybrid, 1 Carp
Weather - Cold start. Mostly cloudy with a northerly breeze
Match - Winter League - rd 3 - 1st in silvers (15th out of 33 overall)

The 3rd round of the winter league and it was my turn for Match lake. With more anglers on the lake than yesterday the expectation was someone would be on a ball of fish and the favoured area would be the top end of the lake i.e. p11, p13 and p15.

In the knockout I had Gary O'Shea who drew p15, so it was going to be a tough ask to get through to next round, particularly when I ended up on p20, which during this series has been poor. However I was optimistic because yesterdays winner came from p19. As for my section Roger Crago was on p11, Judith drew p13 for Tony Rixon, Gary on p15, Joe McMahon on p16 and Dale Howson on p18. Paul Elmes to my right was in the next section on p22.

On the all in I started on corn without feeding searching the swim for some carp. I had a few liners in one spot, but no proper bites, so switched to a maggot rig off bottom, which just produced a couple of roach. I could already hear Tony and Gary catching and knew I was falling behind in the section.

With an hour gone I feed some Gonuts black micros plus some 4mm expanders to my right at the bottom of the shelf and caster to my left. Whilst that settled I tried maggot over a short caster line which I had feed for the previous hour, but never had a bite. I also tried caster down by the p19 pallet, but again no bites which was worry. In fact despite feeding caster here all match it only produced 1 roach.

Back to my long lines, by continually rotating left and right, the right hand swim started to produce a few skimmers including a couple of 2lbers to 4mm expander and a 7lb carp. The left hand caster swim only produced roach and a couple of small perch, so this was converted to a pellet line as well.

By going slightly longer left and right I managed to keep picking up fish and started to feel I might get a chance of picking up in the silvers and this became my focus for the rest of the match, because there were definitely very few carp in the area. I could see Chris Fox opposite on p5 catching a few F1s and skimmers and felt with 90mins left he was slightly ahead of me, although he tried telling me he only had 5lb.

Those last 90mins proved to be difficult as the fish backed off. A try on top of the shelf only produced a couple of roach, so not too much time was wasted here.

With 30mins left, I decided to dump 1/2 pot of micros into the left hand swim. First put in after 15mins I quickly had a decent skimmer on 4mm expander. A roach and then another decent skimmer soon followed to make me feel more comfortable about beating Chris. With 2mins to go a switch to the right hand swim produced a 1lb hybrid, so a really good last 15mins where I probably added 4-5lb to my weight.

Come the weigh in Tony and Gary did the business and I finished 3rd in section, but won the silvers which after yesterdays disappointment I was really pleased about. As for the overall league I'm now too far behind to claim a top 4 position, although in the Silvers league I'm in a good position lying 3rd overall

Match - 8th out of 8

After a weeks worth of mild and wet weather, Mike said pleasure anglers had been catching well, however an overnight frost was likely to have an impact.

With only 8 anglers today, pegging the lake was always going to be difficult, because the fish tend to move into the quite areas. However, at the draw I questioned why p3 had been included and immediately said that would be a peg to avoid. Well I talked myself into drawing it and needless to say I wasn't happy. To be fair the peg does have it's day and it can produce silvers, but I would have preferred to have been somewhere else.

Anyway, I spent the first 45mins of the match looking for a carp, losing one under the platform of p2 and that was the only carp I hooked all day.

The rest of the match was difficult to say the least, it was just a case of catch a fish and then try a different area of the lake. As a result I couldn't get into any rhythm. I had a couple of small fish on maggot over caster, a decent tench on caster over caster by the p2 platform. Where I had fed micros and groundbait produced a couple of hybrids, but its wasn't great.

I had also been pinging 4s to the p4 platform all match, but never had a bite which was a surprise.

Lets just say I was happy to get home.

01/02/17 - Viaduct - Spring

Weight - 13lb 15oz
Catch - 50 Roach, 14 Skimmers, 1 Rudd
Weather - Mild and cloudy
Match - Silverfish Only Open - 11th out of 17

I really fancied some silverfish fishing and decided to book in, although the chance of a pick up was going to be remote with 2 England internationals and a number of very good silvers anglers in attendance.

Peg 18 put me on the railway bank, with Scott Puddy on 19, Kev Newman on 17 and Gareth Lennox on 16.

On the all in 3 balls of groundbait was deposited at 13m, plus caster off to my right at 12m. Starting on the waggler firstly with maggot and then corn cast just off the island only produced a few a roach and a hand size skimmer. A switch to the pole over groundbait after an hour produced a number of small roach, but no real quality. Scott had managed a couple of skimmers on the feeder, but was also being harassed by roach.

Despite refeeding in a number of ways the groundbait line only produced small fish. The caster line was better, with bigger roach, but the issue was there were a number of anglers who were catching some proper sized skimmers and I was falling further behind. I decided to stick with the caster line, moving out to 14m hoping the skimmers would move in later. In the meantime I kept feeding corn towards the island, hoping this line would be solid late on.

By staying on the caster, I eventually had a pound skimmer, quickly followed by its bigger brother and thought here we go, but alas the roach returned.

A switch to fishing the straight lead and corn late on produced 2 good sized skimmers, before a 14lb carp put in an appearance unsettling the swim and the skimmers disappeared.

An enjoyable day with plenty of bites and although I had the best weight on this bank I simply couldn't compete with other areas of the lake which fished very well, with the bulk of the better weights falling to the feeder or waggler.
