Weight - 44lb 8oz
Catch - 13 Carp, 11 F1, 7 Roach, 1 Tench
Weather - Warm & sunny!
Match - Todber series rd 2 - 16th out of 24, 4th out of 6 section
My plans
for the weekend were to spend it with Sue, watch the Malaysian Grand Prix and
generally chill out after what has been a stressful week at work. However Mark
Poppleton needed a replacement for his Todber series, where my 6 peg section
would be between pegs 22 & 29. I fancied 23 or 25 on the corner, but ended
up on 28, which wasn’t great, although I did come 6th from the peg
back in November last year.
For company
I had Chris Cassell on p26 and Steve Musitano on p29. The fishery staff had
obviously been doing some tiding up cutting back the sedges and brambles along
the island, but unfortunately had only got as far as Steve’s peg, which meant I
still had the sedges to deal with.
With a warm
& sunny day forecast the prospects for a good day looked high, however it
turned into a rather frustrating day instead, where the fish where reluctant to
feed. My plan of attack was to start across fishing on top of the far shelf
with pellet, catch shallow if they wanted it that way, then plunder the 5m meat
line and margins.
Chris on
p26 had already landed a carp on the method, by the time I finished feeding
meat/hemp at 5m, down the margin and across to my right by the island. Starting
to my left just toss potting some 4s & 6s with expander on the hook I soon
had an F1, followed by another 2 and a couple of roach. But then I couldn’t get
a bite for 20mins from either of my island swims.
A switch to
feeding caster, with double caster on the hook produced a run of fish before
that died as well. During the first hour I managed 10 fish, but only put
another 2 fish in the net, during the second hour and as yet no carp. I tried
caster shallow, but that proved a waste of time as well.
Whilst the
lake wasn’t fishing well I was already falling behind Chris & Ashley
Tomkins on p25 who were catching carp, so decided to be positive to get back
into the match and started catapulting pellet to the far bank in the hope of
drawing some fish into the swims. Steve on the other hand decided to go the
other way and started fishing negatively toss potting micros with maggot on the
hook, fishing tight to the bare bank.
In the
meantime I tried my meat line and margins early without response. In fact my
margin line was really difficult to fish due the tree and I didn’t spend too
much time fishing it.
The pinging
of pellet was having the desired effect with a few fish now showing themselves
and I had some F1s on 8mm pellet by continually lifting and dropping.
Eventually I my first carp after 3hrs, but after the initial run of fish they
became very cagey.
Steve in
the meantime had a really good run of carp & F1s from his far line, before
they backed off, but the damage was already done and any section pay out was
looking very distant. I really needed my short meat line to work. Which it did,
catching mostly carp, but I had to wait for bites. I still kept pinging pellet
across, but could only catch 1 fish at a time, before they back off again,
although I did mug my best fish of the day which had been swimming down the
middle of the lake.
Overall a
disappointing day, where the first 3hrs cost me. Once I started catching carp I
was keeping pace with those around me, but they turned up too late. Well done
to Steve who also had a few fish down his margin on worm over dead maggot and
won the section, just piping Ashley by 12oz who struggled to catch in the last
couple of hours.
Back at the
car pack most were saying they overfed. The warm sunny conditions luring us
into a false sense of security, but the cold overnight conditions had obviously
put the fish down.

Catch - 17 Carp, 15 Roach, 5 Rudd, 1 Skimmer, 1 Hybrid, 1 Tench
Weather - Mostly, occasional shower. Strong NW breeze
Match - Avon Angling Open - 25th out of 30
I didn’t sleep well, worrying about the consequences of the budget and was wide awake by 4am. At least it gave me a chance to start the 2nd series of Game of Thrones on DVD. After the usual good breakfast at Shipham, 30 of us turned up at Emerald with the match split between Sapphire (16 anglers) and Ruby (14 anglers). I really didn’t care where I drew so long as it was out of the strong north westerly wind. Peg 2 meant I would be fishing from the chalets on Sapphire and more importantly I was out the worst of the wind.
I’m not going to go into too much detail about how my match went, because I fished a bad match. Admittedly it wasn’t helped by an increasingly bad headache where I felt like throwing up towards the end because I felt so tired. That aside I couldn’t get into any rhythm.
Starting short I had a run of silvers and a couple of carp on 4mm expander, before that died. Fishing towards the island which I hoped would be my banker, however there wasn’t any shallower water and if I got too tight to the reeds there was some underwater obstruction to get hooked on.
I did manage a few fish on pellet by the reeds, but also lost quite a few when they dropped off shipping back. I eventually managed to get a run of carp by fishing pellet shallow, but in all honesty my swim was worth a lot more than I produced. I was just glad to get home and get my head down

As a pension specialist, the recent Budget announcement came as a real surprise to everyone and has thrown into question my role with my employer. I have been a big advocate of change within pensions particularly in the “At Retirement” market and there have been improvements particular in the last 5 years. The principle of pensions is to provide an income for the whole of your of life. Now there are various reasons why annuity rates have been poor, including the fact that medical science is prolonging life and there are new products being developed to provide greater flexibility. However, for those who do not have any other source of income, other than the state pension, telling them that they can take the whole fund out and basically spend it is reckless. The press has reported you will only be taxed 20% of the fund (after the 25% tax free lump sum), but some people could unwittingly be taxed as much as 45%, since the extraction of your pension fund will be added to your current income and taxed accordingly. My sincere hope is that some common sense will prevail and guidelines will be put in place ensuring everyone receives advice prior to making any decision. This budget has been more about buying votes and making the coalition look good just prior to next years general election, then the long term stability of the economy. In 3-5 years time the next government will have a problem, because the tax revenue from pension income will fall and will be need to be replaced, which means taxation from somewhere. Also Annuity Providers purchase Government gilts (a type of loan to the Government) to back their annuity products, so by reducing the annuity market effectively reduces Government income from another source. This all has to be paid for somehow.
So my weekend hadn’t got off to the best start and I was in 2 minds about going today, but decided a days fishing was better than stewing at home. The weather had cooled down, with sleet & hail overnight, meaning it was a little chilly at the draw, but at least the sun was out.
The 9 of us were on Match Lake, which fished very well last week, but I didn’t expect it to be as good today due to the weather. My home for the day was p7 which hasn’t been the best recently, but it’s usually worth a few fish. For company it was nice to see Martin Pettifer on p5, who no doubt would be targeting the silver population and Dave Hodgson was to my right on p11.
Because of the sleet/hail overnight I wasn’t sure the fish would be happy to feed on the deck so the intention was to start on top of the shelf feeding caster and couple of bites of meat, whilst letting the other swims settle. Meat/hemp was feed by the p8 pallet & at 5m, whilst micros & 4s were fed at 13m to my left.
Rigs for the day:-
* HB billybob 0.1g > .12 > 16 B911 (top of the shelf)
* HB chump 0.3g > .12 > 16 B911 (pellet down the track)
* Ackoo carrat 0.3g > .14 > 16 B911 (meat)
Starting on double caster by the island I immediately had a few inductions, catching a perch, before losing a foul hooked carp. Another perch followed, then I had 9-10lb carp, but it was obvious the carp weren’t feeding properly. They were just swimming around the island and I lost my 2nd foul hooker.
After 50mins I hadn’t added to my tally and everyone seemed to be struggling, expect for Andy Hembrow on p16 who already had a couple of carp and Martin to my left had a carp & skimmer.
The pellet swim produced a pound skimmer and a couple of small roach. A look down by the p8 pallet produced 2 perch and 2 carp on meat. Must admit I thought this area would be quite productive throughout the match, but surprisingly these were the only carp I caught here.
By the half way point I was struggling to get a bite and decided to dump a pot of caster/meat on the corner of the island, just to make something happen – it didn’t and I soon didn’t bother with the island for the rest of the match, concentrating on the pellet and meat swims. With the meat swim failing, I really needed to catch on pellet. So far I hadn’t feed anything to my right by the island. Since a few carp where starting to show themselves between Dave & myself, some pellet was potted in at 14.5m at the bottom of the shelf and I started to regularly catapult 4s over the top.
It was becoming obvious that Andy and now Mike West on p13 would frame, which just left the silvers up for grabs, but unfortunately Rod Wootton on p18 seemed to have that sewed up, catching skimmers. It seemed the fish had moved into the sheltered & warmer part of the lake. By swapping left & right I started to catch a few skimmers on 4mm expander, I also managed to lose a couple, including one were the line wrapped around the tosspot, preventing the elastic coming out. With 30mins to go 2 handfuls of caster was fed to my right, which produced my biggest bream of the day on double caster, so a nice way to finish.
The weigh in went as predicted although I thought Dave had beaten me, but ended up losing as many as he hooked.
When I got back to the car, the left rear tyre was nearly flat. Thankful Dave Wescott had a mobile compressor and managed to re-inflate tyre which should get me home. However a big thank you to Keith Fielder who kindly repaired the tyre – much appreciated.

With the weather picking up and reports of big weights yesterday I was looking forward to good days fishing. With 16 of us, 10 would be on Match Lake and 6 on 1 side of Johns Lake (41-55). I was happy enough with p55, however it can be a boom or bust peg. When I got my peg I was concerned it wouldn’t be my day, because the wind was quite strong blowing down the lake and the only place with no ripple was my peg, which from experience is not a good thing. However I thought I might be able to draw some fish from the pegs opposite, that was until a father and his 2 sons turned up to fish pegs 56,57 & 58.
Today would be about targeting carp since the peg doesn’t have any silvers form and with that in mind rigs were set up to fish pellet, meat & corn.
To cut a long & boring story short, there didn’t appear to be many fish in the peg. After 3 hrs, I managed 2 carp & an F1 at 14m in open water on corn, but I couldn’t get a bite by the spit or under the tree to my right. With no bites over next 90mins I was really scratching my head what to do next. I decided to keep a positive feeding regime of meat/caster under the right hand tree, changing from pellet/corn by the spit to meat/caster, more meat & caster down the left hand bank and a new open water swim with a big pot of pellet/corn.
The last 90mins proved to be my best. Over the pellet/corn I had all my skimmers & another F1, but no carp. Under the tree only produced 1 carp, which was a surprise, but the real surprise was the fact I couldn’t catch by the spit. After regularly potting in meat/caster with no response, a full pot of caster/meat was dumped in with 30mins to go. Needless to say I had 2 carp in the last 5mins.
I think it was only coincidence that I started catching when the pleasure anglers left, whilst the kids running around didn’t help, I genuinely believe I would have struggled regardless, it just wasn’t my day, bring an end to 8 straight Lands End pickups, so no complaints.
Overall the venue fished very, very well, which I was really pleased to see. Mike has received some unjustified stick about the lack of fish, but it was obvious today and yesterday that this simply isn’t the case. Saturdays open was won with 170lb and the best silvers weight was 44lb. personally I think the constant change between high & low pressure over the winter upset the fish.

Weight - 36lb 2oz (7lb 3oz - silvers)
Catch - 8 F1s, 4 Carp, 7 Roach, 6 Skimmers, 2 Perch, 2 Rudd, 1 Chub
Weather - Warm & sunny . Easterly breeze
Match - Winter League rd 5 - 33rd overall - 9th out of 19 section
I haven’t fished Match Lake since it was drained a few years ago and
wasn’t sure what to expect, other than F1, carp
skimmers, but at least I had an island chuck, unlike Tony Rixon on p39
who was already talking about being battered both sides with Fabio on the next
peg.
Due to the warmer weather, I decided meat would be the way to go. So as well as a waggler and straight lead rig to fish towards the island, I also set up a maggot/caster rig (HB chump 0.3g > .12 > 18 silverfish pellet) to fish over groundbait, a light meat rig (Ackoo carbon carrat 0.3g > .12 > 16 B911) and a rig to fish down the margin (HB billybob 0.2g > .14 > 16 B911).
As the match started the wind picked up a little, blowing from the east which was coming across me, making any presentation on the waggler tricky. Initially I tried fishing 6mm meat, but soon cubed up some 8mm which sat better in the tow. Also the 8mm meat was easier to catapult when the cross wind picked up.

Match - Winter League rd 5 - 33rd overall - 9th out of 19 section
The last round of the winter league was bathed in warm sunshine, which
was very pleasant. So far the MFS team has had 4 poor team draws and as a
consequence we were propping up everyone else, so a decent draw really would
have been appreciated and Martin did the job with team draw 8, which meant
Martin was on 118 (averaging 12.25pts this series), Fred on 85 (ave 16.75pts),
Mike on 56 (ave 15.75pts), Richard on 12 (ave 6pts), leaving myself with 40 on
Match Lake which has averaged 8pts, with the highest total so far being 11pts.
So not a flyer, but at least it looked like it would be worth a few fish.

Initially I tried fishing 6mm meat, but soon cubed up some 8mm which sat better in the tow. Also the 8mm meat was easier to catapult when the cross wind picked up.
After 30mins I had a skimmer on the waggler, a quick try with the lead
and maggot didn’t produce and already I was falling behind those on the left
hand bank (p42-p45) and Fabio on p52 who with the wind behind was able to get
tight to the island.
A switch to the 13m line slightly to the right where I had 3 balls of
groundbait & caster produced another skimmer and a few smaller fish. I had
also fed meat/caster at 13m to my left, but this only produced a couple of
small fish. In fact the first 3hrs of the match was quite frustrating. The
waggler produced a chub, whilst the lead produced a carp and a F1, all on meat,
but I couldn’t put a run of fish together. The left hand meat/caster line
failed to produce anything bigger than a couple of ounces, whilst the right
hand swim did at least provide a couple more skimmers, but I wasn’t going any
where fast.
Since the start I had been regularly feeding my margin at 6m with meat
& caster. With 2hrs to go it was time to see if anything had settled over
it, but nothing. So with nothing to lose it was time dump a pot of caster/meat
at 14m by the p41 pallet. So far I had been reluctant to go this far due to
some pleasure anglers on middle lake who insisted on walking around to the tree
to feed. Since they had left I felt I could feed long without disturbance.
Having left that to settle for 15mins, it was time to see whether
anything had moved over it. Toss potting meat/caster I had 2 perch on double
caster, first put in with 6mm meat I had an F1. The next hour or so was very
productive with mostly F1s and a couple carp all coming to the meat. The hook
pulled out of 1 decent fish, but I had clawed my way back up the section.
15mins from the end I cast out the straight lead & meat to rest the
margin and had a proper pull round. Unfortunately the hook pulled after a few
seconds. Back down the margin produced another F1 before the all out.
Have to say I was left wondering whether I should have gone down the
margin earlier, because another 8lb would have given me an extra 5pts. Also
Phil had caught well on the waggler fishing corn or maggot, whilst I stuck with
meat. Should have tried something different? I’m not sure, but at least it was
an enjoyable day with warm sunshine.
As for the team we finished 8th on the day, with Fred winning
his section and Rich doing well from Spring. Mike & Martin struggled, but
at least the team managed to jump 4 spaces to 15th.
For me this series has been a challenge, with 3 very poor draws (p9,
p131 & p94) in the first 3 matches, but at least I have had some decent
fishing during the last 2 matches, where I finished with the highest weight
& points total from p73 & p40.

05/03/14 - Emerald Pool
Weight - 36lb 8oz
Catch - 91 Hybrids, 25 Skimmers, 12 Roach, 1 Rudd
Weather - Light cloud, sunny periods. Frosty start.
Match - Open - 8th out of 16
So a re-run of the match from 2 weeks ago and the weather has become milder, which meant the carp were likely to be more active, which could & did prove problematic for some. Also because some can’t tell the difference between F1s, fantails, crucians and proper carp, all were excluded for the purpose of this match.
Having loaded the trolley with my all my kit, I then walked the 4 paces to my peg, as I drew the peg closest to the draw. Not a great area, with the open water on the opposite bank being the favoured area, however I was looking forward to getting plenty of bites and just enjoying the day. Needless to say there was plenty of banter flying around, particularly from Tom Thick, which was entertaining.
Plumbing around the swim, I found the deepest spot adjacent to the island at 10m and down the channel to my right towards the footbridge. So both these areas received a consignment of groundbait and caster. At 5m I started loose feeding caster.
Rigs for the day:-
- SM Chimp 0.4g > .10 > 18 silverfish pellet – maggot/caster over groundbait
- Jolly 4x12 > .10 > 18 silverfish maggot
After an initial slow start I soon had some pound roach and a few hybrids from the 5m line, before the line faded and a switch to the 10m line produced a run of fish, before that faded. So after the first hour I had 20 fish and 50 by the end of 2nd hour following a strong run of fish from the 5m line.
The 3rd hour slowed again, but a golden 45mins over the 10m line during the 4th hour, where the float barely had chance to settle when a run of better sized skimmers arrived following a big pot of caster and a ball of groundbait. Unfortunately the trick didn’t work quite as well for the a 2nd time.
The right hand 10m line was proving to be a useful fall back swim for a few extra fish. The 6th and final hour proved to be really slow, when I only caught a couple of fish in a barren 30min spell. The final 30mins was better when I set up a new swim at 11.5m, plus I had a couple carp which didn’t help. In hindsight and speaking to a couple of regulars I over fed the swim towards the end, but I was hoping to pull in some better fish.
To be honest I wasn’t expecting to do that well from my peg and thought I was ahead of the anglers opposite except for Tom & Steve Tucker, because I was catching quicker, but ultimately it was the average size of fish that let me down. 2 weeks ago I was averaging 3 fish to a pound, today it was 4 fish to a pound, with only a handful fish in excess of 8oz. Having said that what a lovely days fishing and the weights were really tight.

Match - Winter League - 10th out of 95, 4th in section
The 4th and penultimate round of the Winter League and it was
my turn for Lodge (and a bit of Cary), which would be float only. After 3 poor
draws we really needed a recent draw and as a team we agreed who ever was on
Campbell would do the team draw, which would have been Fred Robert. However he
decided going to Todber would be more fun that Viaduct, which left it to the
world renowned drawbag Chris Fox. When Chris turned up in the car park I feared
the worst, because it didn’t look happy, although I’m not sure I have ever seen
him happy. Team draw 4 was the same draw we had for the first match, so 113
Campbell, 79 Cary, 3 Spring, 9 Spring, leaving me with 73. Not a great draw for
the team with 2 decent pegs and 3 poor. Peg 73 is a peg I have always managed to
avoid thus far, but also fancied. During this series it hasn’t been the best, with the other corner pegs 64 & 66 being the better, however its usually worth a few fish and the best weight
so far being 24-10 & 14pts.
I did wonder whether I would have one of the days. After plumbing up the
right hand margin & under the tree, I swung round to plumb the left margin
and promptly tangled the rig in the brambles. Needless to say I lost the lot,
much to the amusement of Tony Rixon & Tim Clark on the opposite bank.
Rigs for the day
-
Ackoo carrat 0.3g > .16 > 16 B911 (hair rig) –
margins
- Ackoo carrat 0.3g > .12 > 16 B911 – left hand
margin – caster
- Chimp 0.4g > .10 > 20 silverfish maggot – 13m
I also set up a bread dobbing rig, but it never got used.
Talking to a couple of people prior to setting up I had a good idea of
how to approach the swim, which including dobbing the margin with a bread rig.
Personally this isn’t my bag, so decided to go straight in with double 6mm meat
and if I was getting loads of liners, then I would use the dobbing rig.
5mins in, I was a bit too quick to strike, rather than let the bite
develop and promptly bumped a carp. At least there appeared to be a few fish
around. Rather than go straight in, decided to feed my other swims, so
caster/meat into the left hand margin, 5 balls of groundbait/caster at 13m and some
meat at 5m.
With the feeding done, it was back down the right hand margin at 12m - I
was warned not to go too long too early, which made sense. A couple of minutes
later I had a 6lber, followed shortly by a double figure common. Well that was
as much weight as I had all series.
Chris Davies opposite on p53 had yet to catch and for the next 40mins
neither had I. A quick look over the 13m line immediately produced a pound
skimmer and then a run of small fish. I never bothered here for the rest of the
match.
Back down the right hand margin I had another carp, which secured me
decent points, so pressure off a little. The rest of the match was spent
fishing the right margin, gradually going longer as the fish backed further
away under the tree, catching a couple of carp, then swapping to the left margin.
The left margin produced some quality silvers including a 2-6 perch and
a pound roach, but no carp. The 5m meat line failed to produce. Because I had
my back to the lake for most of the match I wasn’t sure how everyone was doing,
however I could see Tony catching on the waggler and the grapevine suggested
pegs 64 & 66 had produced, so it looked like I would be 4th in
section, which is how it finished, although I picked up for winning my mini
section.
As for the team we had our best result so far with 52pts
Chris Davies finished with 52lb and neither of us had many liners, so
obviously there wasn’t a big shoal of fish at this end of the lake, in fact
most anglers on Lodge had at least 1 carp, so they were well spread.
